Electric drives as fog nodes in a fog computing‐based industrial use case

Electric drives, which are a main component in industrial applications, control electric motors and record vital information about their respective processes. The development of drives as Fog nodes within fog computing platform (FCP) leads to new abilities such programmability, analytics, connectivity, increasing value. In this study, the FORA FCP reference architecture is used implement nodes, called “fogification”. fogified drive its components designed using Architecture Analysis Design Language (AADL). design process was driven by high-level requirements that authors elicited. Both current self baggage drop system key components. fog-based then evaluated several performance indicators (KPIs), reveal advantages over architecture. evaluation results show safety-related isolation enabled with only 9% overhead on total node utilization, applications virtualized zero input–output jitter, hardware cost reduced 44%, machine learning at edge performed without interrupting functionalities an average 85% accuracy. conclusion can successfully required also enable innovative uses needed for realizing vision Industry 4.0.
